The Meaning of SMSC

SMSC stands for Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural:
 

• Spiritual - Explore beliefs and experience; respect faiths, feelings and values; enjoy learning about oneself, others and the surrounding world; use imagination and creativity; reflect.
   

• Moral - Recognise right and wrong; respect the law; understand consequences; investigate moral and ethical issues; offer reasoned views.
   

• Social - Investigate and offer reasoned views about moral and ethical issues; appreciate diverse viewpoints; participate, volunteer and cooperate; resolve conflict; engage with the fundamental values of British democracy.
   

• Cultural - Appreciate cultural influences; appreciate the role of Britain’s parliamentary system; participate in culture opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.

Our Approach to SMSC

At Martham Academy and Nursery we promote SMSC through  the following ways:
 

• Curriculum - Teachers are aware to plan positive opportunities to develop a variety of spiritual, moral, social and cultural experiences. Some evidence of SMSC should be found in every lesson. During an inspection, Ofsted gather evidence of the impact of the curriculum on developing aspects of the pupils’ SMSC development.
   

• Relationships - We build up relationships of trust, respect and support between staff, governors, parents and friends in the local community for the good of the children within our school. This helps us to promote moral, social and cultural values. We teach pupils about healthy relationships and good mental health.
   

• Environment - We encourage an enthusiasm for learning through our school environment. Using and caring for our school environment helps us to promote spiritual, moral and social values in school. We are proud of our Learning Environments throughout the school that celebrate SMSC and British Values
   

• Active - We promote healthy lifestyles in school through lessons, healthy week activities, after school clubs, playground activities and celebrating sporting achievements. We care for children’s emotional wellbeing including their mental health.
   

• Trustworthy - Through the school the concepts and processes of citizenship are taught through school council elections, classroom projects, behaviour management and our links with local schools in our Cluster and Trust. The children learn to appreciate British values and its embedded in our curriculum
   

• Expectations - The school has high expectations of the children and everyone connected with the school. Promoting the well-being of pupils, celebrating their successes and involving children in teaching and school decisions are key parts of our school ethos.
